iPhone 16 vs iPhone 17: which one should you buy?
Display, cameras, storage and battery compared, and who should save money with the iPhone 16 or step up to the iPhone 17.

The iPhone 17 is the bigger upgrade over its predecessor than most years. It brings the smooth 120 Hz ProMotion display, which used to be Pro-only, to the standard iPhone, and doubles the starting storage. The iPhone 16 is still a very capable phone and usually costs less, so the question is whether those upgrades matter to you.

Display: the biggest everyday difference
The iPhone 17’s ProMotion screen refreshes up to 120 times a second, so scrolling, animations and games look noticeably smoother than on the iPhone 16’s 60 Hz panel. It also supports an always-on display, and the screen is slightly larger at 6.3 inches.
If you have used a 120 Hz Android phone or an iPhone Pro, going back to 60 Hz is easy to notice. If you are coming from an older iPhone, the iPhone 16 will still feel quick.
Cameras
Both phones use a 48 MP main camera. The iPhone 17 upgrades the ultra wide camera from 12 MP to 48 MP, which helps with detail in wide shots and close-up macro photos. Its new 18 MP front camera can also take landscape selfies while you hold the phone upright.
Storage and battery
The iPhone 17 starts at 256 GB, double the iPhone 16’s 128 GB. If you shoot a lot of video or keep photos on the phone, that alone can justify the difference, since adding storage on an iPhone means buying a higher variant.
Apple also rates the iPhone 17 for longer video playback, up to 30 hours against 22 hours.
Tip:Compare like for like: put the iPhone 16 256 GB price next to the iPhone 17, not just the 128 GB model.
